In an effort to assist children with special needs, the Fiji Development Bank this week donated $1,800 to fund the Suva Special School’s round-the-island field trip of Viti Levu.

In a small ceremony at the school in Namadi with a backdrop of beaming students, FDB acting Manager Customer Relations & Business Development Candice Hesaie presented the cheque on behalf of the bank.

“This excursion contributes to the student’s development by encouraging independence as they will be away from their family for a few days. We are thrilled to support the Suva Special School and we hope that the students will thoroughly enjoy their trip,” said Mrs. Hesaie.

Located along Salato Road, Namadi, Suva Special School educates children with disabilities, health disorders, behavioural issues, emotional issues and others who do not get enrolled into regular schools.

The school has a roll of 110 students who are assisted by 15 teachers and 8 ancillary staff.

“We are very thankful to FDB for their kind assistance. Their donation will pay for the bus that will take our students. We can now start informing the parents to start packing as the donation as enabled us to make the trip,” School Camp Coordinator Mrs. Tulia Ann Tuwai said.

“Part of our school programmes is to take students out for camping due to the fact that each child will need to equip themselves to cope adequately with every situations and experiences. The ability to develop self-help skills, taking responsibility and to live an independent life is paramount to their learning.”

The students will be visiting educational sites around Viti Levu from 4-6 November with sleep overs at the Lautoka Special School and the Rakiraki Special School. This will assist them in interacting and socialising with students from other special schools.
